To Desk or Not To Desk...?

So, I am thinking about giving up my teacher desk to make more room for the 32+ Firsties that will be coming next week.  I would love to hear about anyone else who gave up the desk and if you love or hate the idea.  BTW, this cute picture is how my desk NEVER looks!  :)
Have a great week, Everybody!  I'm FINALLY going to get in my classroom tomorrow!   Pictures will come later...

  1. Oh wow! I'm still shaking my head at the "32 Firsties" part! Holy cRAMMed room! I have 24 firsties in my classroom and that's even a bit crowded sometimes!

I'm not sure if I could give up my desk. I like having my own area for papers, files, and a place to sit when my students are gone to PE or Music or Art.

What about downsizing to a very compact desk?

    1. That is another idea. I'll have to see what's floating around the school that hasn't been claimed. I'm going to put in a little bookcase if I do trade in my big desk. Thanks for your ideas! :)

  2. I got rid of my desk a few years ago when I moved into my portable. I had to do some creative reorganizing (aka threw/gave a lot of stuff away) but I haven't missed it's bulkiness in a while. I do find myself having to clear off my reading table more often though. =)

    1. Emily, I was thinking about putting a tall, skinny bookcase behind my reading group table with my stuff there. I'll have to see how everything looks tomorrow. Thanks for your advice. :)

  3. I love not having a desk.... keep in mind though that you want a sort of "catch all". Even though I don't have a desk I have a small area behind my reading group table where I can keep organized and put my things. I needed more than just my group table because I know that otherwise I will just keep it all on the table and then it will all just end up on the floor when I am making room for the kids.

I hope this helps!! 32 firsties... my goodness!! You are in for a year, girl!

    1. I ended up keeping it, but I really like how it worked out with our new SMARTboard, white board, and bulletin board arrangements that the district did. I have it in a corner, with the reading group table right by it. I love it like that. Thanks for your ideas!

  4. Wow, 32 first graders! I feel bad complaining about the 25 I had last year. I gave up my desk last year because my room was very crowded with all the desks and a portable Smart Board and its projector/laptop cart. Although I appreciated the extra room, I moved it back in this year because all of the clutter that used to end up on my desk ended up on my small group table. I am too old to meet with reading groups on the floor!

    1. This is sad, but I decided to keep it in the room because it would have been too hard to move out--it is big and with all the kids' tables, it would have been a nightmare. Maybe next year. :)

  5. It wasn't my choice to not have a teacher desk anymore... it's just how things are at my school, but I'm used to it now. It definitely clears up a lot of space in your classroom. But you'll also need to be sure to have some kind of organization/storage nearby. I have lots of shelving behind my teacher table so it works! Good luck!

    1. I decided to keep the desk and plan to try it next year. I didn't have the oomph in me to move it and then try to track down the perfect bookshelves. Thanks for your ideas!

  6. I've contemplated this too, but I love having my space! I know a ton of teachers in my school who got rid of their desks though and they're welcome to get desks back, but they never ask for them back. Please blog about it if you do get rid of it! I'd love to hear your opinion!

    1. I think what really needs to go is one of my 4 file cabinets!!! Maybe I'll work on purging when I get my student teacher. :) The desk is staying for this year. Maybe next year. Thanks for your ideas!
